Community Health

The Community Health department of the SIHC reaches out to the local tribal community. Our theme is "Working Towards Wellness." The department consists of a multi-disciplinary team of community health care specialists. We offer the following programs which emphasize healthy living:

Nutrition Services

Good eating habits are vital to your family's well-being. SIHC promotes nutrition education and health awareness, and provides individual and group counseling by a registered dietitian. Weekly nutrition classes are offered on the reservations.

Smoking Cessation (Stop smoking!)

Learn to give up tobacco safely and effectively. Our smoking cessation plan primarily uses nicotine patches. We offer individual counseling with weekly follow-up support visits.

Senior Services

Our need for health care assistance increases with age. SIHC offers extensive services for elderly adults including: home evaluations for safety, health education, nutrition counseling, referrals, and organized group social events. The Meals-On-Wheels Program is available for eligible individuals. Free health screenings and flu shots are also provided.

Community Health Screenings

Our free health screenings are designed to uncover the warning signs of numerous diseases and serious medical conditions, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol levels, anemia, and obesity. We also offer vision and hearing screening, and check lung capacity and percent of oxygen in blood, as well as blood pressures and a computerized health risk assessment analysis.

Diabetes Education Program

Our team approach to diabetes care includes the physician, nutritionist, registered nurse, public health nurse, and most importantly the client. Group education classes are held monthly. Individual education is also offered.
